2012 BMW G650GS Sertao Review
More off-road-worthy features mean more adventure for BMWs humble G650GS
BMW has a well-deserved reputation as a maker of rugged, all-terrain-conquering motorcycles that also serve as capable, good-mannered street machines. These days the bike that fills that image in most motorcyclists’ minds is the R1200GS. And for good reason: the big GS (and up-spec Adventure model) is a sales volume leader for the venerable German motorcycle manufacturer.
But the success of BMW’s two-wheeled adventuring ways doesn’t result solely from the glory-grabbing 1200GS or even the successful F800GS. There’s a humbler member of the Beemer family that’s contributed substantially to raising the profile of the GS lineup of motorcycles.
The 650GS Sertão: Even More GS in the Littlest GS
Modestly appointed by comparison to the 1200, the G650GS – powered by a 652cc Single – has been the first step into GS-land for lots of riders, starting way back in 1993 when this single-cylinder, chain final-drive (a serious break from the traditional BMW twin-cylinder platform at the time) was first born as the F650 Funduro.
For 2012 BMW has amped up the GS portion of the G650GS Kevin Duke recently reviewed, by creating a more off-road inclined stablemate, the G650GS Sertão. Named after the dry, hot region in Northeastern Brazil of the same name, BMW wanted to re-infuse the current 650 with the same adventurous spirit it gave to the F650GS in 2000 when the F650GS Dakar was crafted in honor of BMW’s successes in the Paris-Dakar Rally. BMW says the Sertão is the new Dakar.
The Sertão retains the same frame, brakes, instrumentation and 652cc Single from the standard 650GS. But giving the Sertão greater advantage in unpaved environments is: 8.3 inches of suspension travel (nearly 2 inches more than standard), spoked wheels (21-inch in front), hand guards, a 5.0-inch taller windscreen, steel lower engine guard and a 33.9-inch seat height (2.4-inch increase). A fork brace was added and the lower/inner fender removed, while the 1200GS-esque upper fender beak is a tad longer. And, for those counting, the Sertão’s 426-lbs wet weight is 4.0-lbs more than the standard G650GS.
While the standard G650GS is a known quantity to us on the street, BMW invited the moto media to a day of mixed riding environments to sample the Sertão. The day-ride started at the now famous and successful RawHyde Adventures riding school located near Castaic, Calif.
RawHyde focuses almost exclusively on creating anew, or improving upon, the off-road riding talents of motorcyclists, catering especially to BMW GS owners. Founder and proprietor, Jim Hyde, created the school in 2000 initially as a dirt bike/dual-sport training camp, but over the years Hyde discovered that within the GS community few owners of the world-traveling Beemer possessed the skills necessary to allow them to fully unleash the potential of the GS.
After years of successfully teaching off-road and adventure-type riding to the GS community, RawHyde became an official BMW training facility in 2008 – one of only nine BMW-endorsed schools in the world. Known as the BMW Off-Road Academy, RawHyde offers three levels of adventure-riding training, as well as a number of multi-day excursions, including the Continental Divide Ride – a nine-day journey along the spine of the Divide.
Hyde and his team have competed in the Dakar Rally, and plan to do so again in the 2012 event.
Hyde knows the capabilities of the G650GS, as well as the mountainous areas around his facility. A route that included miles of sometimes rough and rutted Jeep-type trails with numerous shallow water crossings along the way proved the proper dirty mixture to go along with plenty of paved-surface riding.
Adventure Worthy
In his review of the standard 650, Kevin refers to the bike as having a “highly cooperative chassis that presents no surprises,” which is aided by a wide, one-piece handlebar providing good steering leverage for “knife-like agility” when dicing up corners. These qualities remain in the Sertão. And despite its additional suspension travel, the front-end doesn’t dive excessively under braking.
Damping in the Sertão’s new long-travel sticks was ideal both on and off-road – impressive considering the fork lacks adjusters – while the 8-plus inches of travel smoothed out even the biggest ruts and rocks I encountered. Good suspension aside, 426 lbs is hefty by dirt bike standards. Yet that streetbike-sized figure didn’t prove a significant hindrance on the trails – the humble engine has the power to pull the bike’s weight out of greasy mud holes or up and over steep inclines, as evidenced by a handful of more daring journos’ antics during the day.
Further impressive, the Sertão’s street-biased Metzeler Tourance tires didn’t prove a serious disadvantage while off-road.
The G650 Thumper is counterbalanced to offset vibration inherent in a single-cylinder engine architecture. At speeds upwards of 80 mph the amount of engine vibes reaching the Sertão rider are minimal – a welcome trait when droning down the interstate. A flat, plentiful torque curve (44.2 ft-lbs at 7200 rpm as tested) means useful grunt early in the rev range with plenty of pulling power elsewhere, even when lugging along in higher gears.
However, despite near ideal gear ratios for street riding, I found myself wishing first gear had an even lower ratio than it already does when it came to picking my way through tighter, more technical off-road sections. The sometimes-finicky clutch combined with how quickly the bike can pull away in first gear made it challenging to finesse my way through portions of terrain that demanded near-crawling speeds.
To better enable slow speed maneuvering, first gear in the R1200GS Adventure is 10% shorter than first gear in the standard GS. I’d like to have seen a similar move made here between the Sertão and standard G650GS. However, this is nit picking and by no means a deal-breaker for the new G-GS. Clutch effort is notably light albeit with a too-early engagement for my preferences and the 5-speed trans clicks without a hitch.
A caveat to thoughtful riders says you may want to reposition the shift lever in order to get the toe of bulky motocross-style boots underneath the shift peg for less cumbersome upshifts.
Kevin admired the standard 650’s ergos, noting that its 30.7-inch seat height creates an environment welcoming of riders of shorter stature, especially for a bike with 6.5 inches of travel. The Sertão’s off-road biased suspension creates a seat height far less welcoming of short folks, and you won’t find a low seat option for the Sertão as you will for the standard 650GS. However, there is an optional tall seat (35.4 inches, $239).
I’m not the tallest geezer around, but even with my 30-inch inseam I found the Sertão’s seat height manageable when it came time to dismount or put a boot down during a stop – on and off-road. Additionally, the seat’s width and foam density made it a comfortable place to rest when I wasn’t standing on the footpegs (which offer the added convenience of a removable vibration-damping rubber insert).
Another add-on that may seem pricey when you don’t need it, but soon becomes worth its weight in gold when you do, is the heated grips option. Portions of the ride took us to elevations that saw several inches of fallen snow and near-freezing temps. On the high setting the grips produced enough heat to keep my winter-gloved hands feeling borderline hot. During the frigid route section I realized I would’ve gladly craigslisted something of value in order to have the factory-installed heated grips ($319 if purchased separately) on a Sertão I owned.
The new 650GS’s tall-ish windscreen is a genuine advantage in any scenario, since it offers increased wind deflection while bombing down the freeway, as well as providing some additional protection from debris kicked up by other riders when venturing off the beaten path.
Although numerous evolutionary changes to this BMW model over the past 19 years have given us the G650GS we know today, it has nevertheless remained at its core an approachable but highly capable motorcycle from BMW.
The Sertão is worthy of its GS badging.
Look for the G650GS Sertão in dealers in January 2012 with a base MSRP of $8650, or $8950 with the heated grips and power socket package.

Repsol Honda Team Le Mans Free Practice Sessions 2011 MotoGP
2011 MotoGP : After their strong performances in Portugal, the Repsol Honda Team (trio) maintained momentum and rhythm in the first free practice sessions of the Grand Prix of France at Le Mans. The team returned to work with a similar set up used two weeks ago in Estoril, a comparable track layout wise, and after the first two sessions the riders are confident in improving their pace and performance looking for good qualifying results.
Casey Stoner topped the time sheets in both free practice sessions, with Dani Pedrosa the third fastest rider of the day and Andrea Dovizioso sixth.
Stoners fastest lap time of 133.782 in his first outing with the RC212V in Le Mans was just a fraction off Valentino Rossis pole position last season (133.408) and almost half a second quicker than the existing Circuit Lap Record of 134.215 set by Rossi in 2008.
Stoner kept a similar set up to Portugal and focused on improving traction in the rear of his machine. Pedrosa, after missing the majority of the post race test in Portugal due to his physical condition, took his time this afternoon to try the new Ohlins front fork and also both hard and soft tyres to compare.
Dovizioso spent the sessions trying to improve stability under braking and working on set up for tomorrows qualifying session.

"The track has quite good grip and we have a better feeling than in the past few years in this track and we are very happy, we went out this morning and didnt change so much from Portugal as the tracks are pretty similar for us, we felt good immediately and then changed a few things and tried something we havent tested before on the Honda which seemed to give us more traction in the rear without affecting anything else.
"The weather is fantastic here and I hope it stays this way! Were happy to be where we are and well continue to work tomorrow morning to ensure we have the best set up for qualifying. Every session we do were trying to modify something to improve the bike, I dont know if this is good enough to get pole at the moment as people are able to pull out a very good lap on the soft tyre, today we are fast but Im sure tomorrow the others will also be fast, at this moment we feel comfortable with the settings with just a few more adjustments to make tomorrow, hopefully we can stay ahead of the rest".
DANI PEDROSA – 3rd - 134.431
FP1 - 1:34.431, 22 laps, 92 km.
FP2 - 1:34.478, 23 laps, 96 km.
"In the morning it was difficult with the cold conditions to find some grip and then in the afternoon the grip got better but we couldnt improve as much as we expected. Anyway we have some ideas and I hope to make a step forward tomorrow. We need to work on the front and rear suspension to get a better feeling, the bike was moving a lot this afternoon entering and at the exit of the corners. We have to keep the momentum and bounce back again because we are doing well, the bike is going very strong and we have to keep focused and work hard".
ANDREA DOVIZIOSO – 6th - 134.705
FP1 - 1:34.808, 22 laps, 92 km.
FP2 - 1:34.705, 21 laps, 88 km.
“This morning we started well and we continued working on the set up of the bike in the afternoon. We tried a different setting on the other bike to improve the stability under braking but we didn’t get the results we expected. Tomorrow we will continue to fine tune the set up and the electronics.
"I feel I have margin to improve so I’m not too worried, I have always had good results on this track and the feeling with the machine is good. I’m not happy of the nine tenths gap from Casey, he is very fast, but apart from him we are closer to the first riders. We need to keep on working and improve the race pace."
MARC MARQUEZ - Moto2
FP1 - 139.764, 23 laps, 96 km.
FP2 - 139.236, 21 laps, 88 km.
"We are happy with the work we did today, as each time we took the track we improved our times. In the first Free Session, it was a bit difficult because we arrive to a circuit hat is new for me, although I know it from 125cc, but the lines and the references are different. We have to go slowly to avoid any mistakes.
"I crashed due to an oil spill on track. I did not see the flag, or maybe they had not time to show it, but it was nothing serious. In the second Practice Session, we followed the same line, improving with each step. It is clear that we need to improve a bit in some aspects, but we will be again near the fastest in no time and that is always positive."

2011 Ducati Monster 1100
2011 Ducati Monster 1100
In search of the perfect corner
The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy that made the Monster a motorcycling icon is now further enhanced to redefine your naked expectations. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.
Ideal for riders who want to make the ultimate lifestyle expression, this jewel of style and performance is powered by the charismatic two-valve 1100cc Desmodromic twin-cylinder engine, famous the world over for its legendary torque and smooth acceleration. For 2011, the Monster 1100 is updated with a new subframe ready to accept the passenger-friendly grab-rail accessory created by Ducati Performance and is available also in an enhanced ‘S’ specification, both versions with optional ABS.
The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s continuous pursuit of genuinely
compact, high performance motorcycles and with the Monster 1100’s dry weight at 373lb (169kg) it
represents the lightest bike in its category.
Today’s Monster family is the result of constant evolution in design and technology. The powerful and
breathtaking top-of-the-range models sport attractive ergonomics and present pure style and charisma, while preserving the essence of the original naked bike concept. The Monster 1100 design perfectly balances sports performance, riding pleasure and stunning looks and its seductive line is the product of a Ducati philosophy where form and function combine to create the naked bike par excellence.
Pure riding pleasure is guaranteed with super-light and agile handling characteristics combined with the
exceptional torque of the Desmo engine and a competition-level braking system.

1100 chassis
At just 169kg (373lb), the Monster 1100 is the lightest bike in its class. The exceptional handling, combined with 10.5kgm (75.9lb-ft) of torque from the Ducati Desmo engine, results in a pure, adrenalin-filled ride.
With a 40mm higher ride-height than the 696, the increased ground clearance of the Monster 1100 enables impressive lean angles, to fully reveal the sports side of this naked bike. The extremely lightweight aluminium alloy Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility and are fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre at the front and a 180/55ZR at the rear, both Pirelli Diablo Rosso. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability. The sports character of the bike is further accentuated by aluminium tapered handlebars.
The 43mm fully adjustable Showa forks and Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit, with adjustable spring pre-load and return damping, offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide that perfect ‘feel’. The steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, which achieves progressive characteristics, enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, and eliminates the weight of any rocker-arm mechanism.
The Trellis frame, developed in conjunction with Ducati Corse uses the same tube diameter and thickness as the 1198 SP. The brand new lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and swingarm, and now accepts the passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster’s stylish lines.
Maximum control braking
The power of the Monster 1100 can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The impressive Brembo system features radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2- piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. An optional ABS system is also available to add extra confidence in all conditions.
Single-sided swingarm
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘pure sports’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is in chill-cast aluminium and achieves the best mechanical characteristics while reducing final weight for improved handling.
Desmodromic charisma
The Monster 1100 power unit is the legendary 1100cc, air-cooled, Dual Spark L-Twin engine whose 95hp gives it that unmistakable Ducati sound. Developed for an incredibly flexible power delivery, the 1100 Desmodromic engine provides the rider with enough torque to exit the most challenging of corners in pure sports style. The impressive 10.5kgm (75.9lb-ft) of torque, typical of the Ducati L-Twin engines, excites with every twist of the throttle.
The two-valve engine on the Monster 1100 features lightweight crankcases produced using the same
innovative Vacural® technology that Ducati first introduced on the Superbike 848 and achieves significant weight saving while ensuring consistent wall thickness and increased strength.
The 1100 engine boasts a 98mm bore and a 71.5mm stroke, delivering 95hp at 7500rpm and an impressive torque of 10.5kgm (79.5lb-ft) at 6000rpm. To underline the sports character of the bike, the new Monster 1100 is fitted with Ducati’s very own dry clutch, which offers a variety of customisation options with the Ducati Performance accessories.
The Monster 1100 has a specially designed exhaust system featuring an electronically controlled exhaust valve that enables the use of silencers similar to those of the 696. The system has one lambda probe dedicated to each cylinder, enabling precise fuelling for a smoother power delivery while complying with current emission regulations.
1100 colours
The Monster 1100 is available in three colour schemes of red or silver with red Trellis frame or
black with matte black frame. All three colours are set against elegant looking silver wheels. The
1100 can be further personalised from a choice of ten additional colour schemes available within
the innovative Monster Art program.
2011 Ducati Monster 1100 Technical Details
ENGINE
Desmodromics
The incredible valve performances of our engines are only possible because of Ducatis unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valve to follow the steep closure profile of the cam lobe if it were relying upon a normal valve spring. With the Desmo system, the valve is closed mechanically with the same accuracy as it is opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including our world-beating Superbike and Desmosedici MotoGP engines.
Power & torque curves
The Monster 1100 produces 95hp (69,8kW) @ 7.500rpm and 75,9 lb-ft (10,5kgm) of torque @ 6000rpm
Exhaust system
Providing a deep and rich exhaust tone within current noise and emissions regulations is no mean feat, but the Monster definitely provides the L-Twin sound famous of Ducati. Its bold, high-level twin mufflers also make a striking style statement. The exhaust system has one Lambda probe dedicated to each cylinder, enabling precise fuelling for a smoother power delivery as well as complying with current emission regulations. The Monster 1100 has a specially designed exhaust system which features an electronically controlled exhaust valve.
Vacural® crankcases
The two-valve engine on the Monster 1100 features an all-new crankcase which significantly reduces overall engine weight. They are produced using the same innovative Vacural® technology that Ducati previously applied only to Supersport models. This method of production relies on vacuum die-casting, which improves the quality of the casting by avoiding porosity, air pockets and oxidation. This enables greater dimensional accuracy and higher ductility for the aluminium alloy. Ducati designers have drawn upon the benefits of this innovative process, redefining the conformation and thickness of the sides on the new crankcase using finite element simulations (FEM) and tests, which resulted in achieving the required reliability standards as well as attaining a significant weight reduction of 3kg (6.6lb) compared to previous versions of the 1100cc engines.
Dry clutch
To underline the sports side of the bike, the Monster 1100 is fitted with Ducati’s very own dry clutch, which offers a variety of customisation options with the Ducati Performance accessories.
Desmodue
The Monster 1100 power unit is the legendary 1100cc, air cooled, Dual Spark L-Twin engine whose 95hp gives it that unmistakable Ducati sound. Developed for an incredibly flexible power delivery, the 1100 Desmodromic engine provides enough torque to exit the most challenging of corners. The impressive 10.5kgm (75.9lb-ft) of torque, typical of the Ducati L-Twin engines, will excite with every twist of the throttle
CHASSIS
Showa forks
The 43mm fully adjustable Showa forks offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide that perfect ‘feel’.
Brembo brakes
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.
Lightweight construction
The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more ‘pared down’ than their predecessors. The Monster 1100 is the lightest bike in its category.
Lightweight 5-spoke wheels
With a 40mm higher ride-height than the 696, the increased ground clearance of the Monster 1100 enables impressive lean angles, letting you explore the sports side of this new naked bike to the full. The extremely lightweight aluminium alloy Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility. The 3.50x17 front wheel is fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre while the rear 5.50x17 wheel has a 180/55ZR. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability.
Sachs rear suspension
The Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit offers adjustable spring pre-load and return damping. Using the proven ‘cantilever’ system, the steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, thus achieving a progressive action. This enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, while eliminating the weight of the rocker-arm mechanism.
Single-sided swingarm
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.
Monster Trellis
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.
Ergonomics
The heavily tapered and deeply sculpted fuel tank cover allows maximum comfort and control. The narrowing of the bikes ‘waist’ has the same effect as lowering the seat height, making it easier for more riders to get both feet flat on the floor. The steering-lock is vastly improved with a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel. Incredible attention to detail has gone into maximising the effective steering-lock.
EQUIPMENT
Empowering Controls
The Monster 1100 features radial pumps with adjustable levers on beautifully shaped aluminium tapered handlebars.
Instrumentation
Visually simple digital instrumentation provides an array of data on command or, at a glance, just speed and revs. Information available at your fingertip include: scheduled maintenance warning, oil temperature, trip odometer, lap time, fuel reserve, warning light for low oil pressure, turn signals, over-rev warning, immobilizer and neutral warning light.
ABS
For the first time since its debut, the Ducati Monster will be available with ABS (anti-lock braking system). Unlike the majority of motorcycle ABS set-ups, this system has the advantage of ensuring a more natural braking ‘feel’ for the rider. ABS system is available as an optional.
DDA ready
The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The bike has been built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of special DDA software and a memory key that slots into a plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy new battery charger available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.
Stopwatch
The digital display is programmed with a stopwatch function that, when enabled, can be triggered by using the high-beam flash button and each recorded time stored in a memory. After your journey or track session, the times or lap times can be recalled from the memory and scrolled through by using the instrumentation buttons on the left-hand switchgear.
Silencer covers
The new silencer guards feature a longer shape and provide improved heat protection
LED taillight
An LED rear light unit satisfies the minimalist, weight-saving design ethos found throughout the Monster 696. The specially designed strip of LEDs are enhanced by a special diffuser lens to deliver outstanding light clarity and incredible longevity.
Headlight
The triple-parabola headlight on the Monster 696 utilises the latest optical technology and advanced construction techniques to provide an incredibly compact lighting package. In spite of its compact size, the headlight throws a broad and deep beam to provide excellent visibility and make night riding safer. Viewed from the side, its discrete silhouette mimics the radical shape of the fuel tank.
CONCEPT
Less is Monster
The less-is-more philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducatis never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more pared down than their predecessors. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped so now more than ever, form follows function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, less-is-more also means less-is-Monster. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.
Monster Story
In 1992 Ducati unveiled a new prototype that was to become an icon. Ducati’s creation awed the crowds and the world’s media of that year’s Cologne International Motorcycle show. The 900 Monster was a motorcycle that created a truly new niche – dramatically styled, minimalist in stature yet bristling with innovative engineering solutions. The Monster’s radical styling has also provided the inspiration for an entire after-market sector specialising in hot-rod parts for this legendary machine. For this reason, rarely do you see two Monsters the same. This radical and refreshing design departure also influenced other manufacturers but, as the old adage states: imitation is the highest form of flattery… The Monster is characterised by a long and successful history, by its introduction during the years of numerous cylinders and uncountable colour options, but above all by a constant technological evolution that this year brings us to the birth of two new versions: the Monster 696 and the Monster 1100, representative of a new era of Monster.
Monster ART
‘Logomania’ is the second collection of the innovative Monster Art project and a stunning tribute to famous Ducati logos and colour schemes that span more than 50 years of authentic brand heritage.
Changing the colour and character of any model in the current Monster line-up in just 10 minutes, is the genius of the Monster Art program and a feature that passionately supports the Monster culture of customisation.
Consisting of tank panels, micro-bikini fairing, single-seat cover and front mudguard, the kits have now become a modern canvas in the world of motorcycle art and a unique method of Monster personalisation.
Features and Benefits
Monster ABS
The 2011 Monster family now offers all models with optional anti-lock braking system (ABS).
The ABS developed by Ducati and offered as an option on the entire Monster family is the most
sophisticated version available in motorcycling. Designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy
braking or when braking in low grip conditions, the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel
sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a specific safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate calliper to avoid wheel lock.
The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario.
Monster frame
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and
structural backbone of all the Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame
design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and also enables a very useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel. The brand new lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and swingarm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster’s stylish lines.
Monster instrumentation
Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential
data by default, and even more by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear. Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection. In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobiliser status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.
The display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. All Monsters are built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into USB style plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy ‘battery maintainer’ available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

2011 Honda PCX 125
The new 2011 Honda PCX 125 is your ticket to ride wherever you want to. It’s a great new addition to our scooter line that combines sportbike-inspired styling, on-the-go convenience and great fuel economy into a package that makes riding fun. Here is a stylish and decidedly sporty new mid-sized Honda scooter that really delivers on routine errands, short commutes and even enjoyable little getaways the 2011 PCX™. Its modern good looks combine with easy handling to create a practical yet fun riding companion. Thanks to its strong-running 125cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected four-stroke engine and capable chassis, the 2011 Honda PCX 125 serves well for getting around town and even for backroad weekend adventures. With comfortable seating to accommodate the rider plus a passenger and a surprisingly large under-seat storage area thats big enough to swallow a full-face helmet and more, the 2011 Honda PCX 125 serves as an accommodating package that rolls economical transportation and a fun-filled ride all into one. With room for two, a liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 125cc engine, a Honda V-Matic automatic transmission and tons of convenient storage everywhere, there’s only one question left.

Think you can handle being the center of attention when you show up on one?
How Much Fun Can You Pack Into 125cc?
The new PCX’s liquid-cooled engine offers a perfect balance of power and terrific fuel economy. And there’s plenty of room for a passenger.
More Than Meets The Eye.
The PCX is all about taking care of its rider. Exhibit A: the large seat and floorboards. You get room to move around and your passenger gets plenty of room too. The full-length floorboards and step-through design also makes getting on and off a whole lot easier.
It Doesn’t Get Any Easier Than This.
Automatic transmission? Check. Locking under seat storage big enough for a full-face helmet? Check. Separate glove compartment? Check. Side stand and center stand? Check. Theft deterrent ignition cover with locking steering? Check. And the checklist just goes on and on.
2011 Honda PCX 125 Features
Parking Versatility The PCX gives you the choice of both a sidestand and a centerstand. That makes it easy to park for a fast dash into a store (the sidestand) or when you need to park it upright in a tight space (the centerstand). With a lot of other scooters, you only get one or the other.
PGM-FI Engine - With plenty of power to carry you and a passenger too, the PCX features liquid cooling and Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) for great performance in all traffic conditions. Plus PCX offers some impressive fuel economy too!
V-Matic Transmission - With the Honda V-Matic automatic transmission, riding couldnt be easier. Just start the engine, twist the gas, and go.

The V-Matic means no shifting, ever – so you concentrate on the road ahead and simply enjoy the ride! The V-matic is a continuously variable design, so youll never feel it lurch from one gear to another. Smooth.
